Decadent Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 16, 2026
Decadent keeps your recipes on your iPhone or iPad. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information. In short: your recipe library, your photos, your menus and your grocery lists stay on your device. A recipe’s words or photos leave it only when Claude reads them for you, and your store names and approximate location leave it only when you ask for grocery stores near you.
The short version
- We do not require an account or ask for your name, email, or personal details.
- We do not use analytics, advertising, or third-party trackers.
- Your recipes, photos, collections, menus, cookbook and grocery lists are stored on your device, in the app’s own folder, and are included in your own iCloud or computer backup like any other app data.
- Scanning a recipe card or cookbook page with the built-in reader happens on your device.
- Nutrition numbers are worked out on your device from USDA food data that ships inside the app. Nothing is sent.
- In cook mode you can turn on Listen and say a few cooking words, and you can ask the app to read a step out loud. Both happen on your device: nothing you say is recorded or sent anywhere.
- When you pick a video to read, your device listens to it and reads the words shown on it, on the device. The video and its sound never leave your device. Only the words go to Claude.
- Claude, an AI made by Anthropic, can read a recipe for you: a photo of a page, screenshots you pick, a web page’s words, a post’s words, or a video’s words. Only that recipe is sent, through our server, and we keep nothing.
- In-app purchases are processed by Apple.
Recipes you import from the web
When you paste or share a recipe link, the app downloads that page directly from the website, the same way a browser would, and reads the recipe out of it. The website sees an ordinary page request from your device. That request carries nothing about you. The website’s handling of the request is governed by its own privacy policy, not ours.
The app’s own browser (used to search for recipes and to open pages that need it) works like Safari: the websites you visit in it can keep their own cookies inside Decadent.
Posts and videos from other apps
When you share a TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, Reddit or X post into Decadent, the app asks that app’s own website for the post, the same way a browser would. If the post links a recipe website, that website is read as above.
When a recipe has a video, it plays on the recipe page in that app’s own player (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest or YouTube). The player loads from that company, which sees the request and can keep its own cookies inside Decadent, as it would in a browser. Their handling of it is governed by their own privacy policies.
Photos
Photos you take or choose for a recipe are processed and stored on your device. They leave it only when Claude reads them for you (below), and then only the photos of that recipe.
When Claude reads a recipe
Decadent reads most recipes itself, on your device or straight from the website. Claude reads a recipe only in these cases:
- You tap “Ask Claude” (on a web page, a post or a video), or “Read” on screenshots you picked.
- You import a post whose recipe is written in the post itself, or you pick a video to read. Claude starts as soon as the post or the listening is ready.
- The built-in reader could not read a scanned page well. Claude then starts on its own, if you have reads left.
What is sent, and only for that recipe: the photo of the page or the screenshots you picked, or the words (of the web page, of the post, or heard and shown in the video). Never your library, your other photos, the video or its sound.
- The app sends it to our server, together with an anonymous proof from Apple that the request comes from a real device running Decadent, or Apple’s signed record of your subscription. Neither contains your name, your email or a device identifier we can read.
- Our server passes it to Anthropic’s Claude to read, and returns the recipe to your device.
- Our server keeps nothing: no photo, no words, no recipe, no receipt, no history. The only thing it remembers is a count of how many reads a subscriber has used this month.
- Anthropic protects it at least as well as this policy does. Under Anthropic’s commercial terms, it is not used to train Anthropic’s models. Anthropic deletes it within 30 days, unless it is flagged as breaking Anthropic’s Usage Policy or the law requires longer. Anthropic’s handling is governed by Anthropic’s privacy policy (anthropic.com/legal/privacy).
You can keep Claude from reading anything: do not tap Ask Claude or Read, and do not import posts or videos whose recipe is not on a website. One exception: a scan the built-in reader could not read well goes to Claude on its own while you have reads left.
Purchases
Decadent offers an optional one-time purchase and an optional auto-renewing subscription, both processed by Apple. To count subscriber reads, our server checks the subscription record that Apple signs. That check involves only Apple’s anonymous purchase record, never your name, email or recipes.
Permissions we request, and why
- Camera — to scan recipe cards and cookbook pages, and to take a photo of a dish. Used only when you choose to scan or take a photo.
- Photo Library — to choose a picture for a recipe, or screenshots or a video to read a recipe from. We only access the photos and videos you select.
- Location — only if you ask for grocery stores near you. Your approximate location and the names of your stores are sent to Apple’s map search to find those stores nearby and pin them on the map; tapping a pin opens Apple Maps. We do not store your location, and it is never sent to our server.
- Microphone — only in cook mode, and only while you have Listen switched on, so you can say “next”, “start timer” or “read” with your hands busy. The microphone is off whenever Listen is off, whenever cook mode is closed, and whenever Decadent is not the app you are using.
- Speech Recognition — to turn what you say in cook mode into one of nine cooking words. Your device does this by itself. What you say is not recorded, not saved and not sent anywhere.
You can change or revoke any of these permissions at any time in your device Settings.
Sharing your library, menus and cookbook
You can share your whole library as one file, and share a menu, a recipe card or a cookbook as a PDF or a picture. These are made on your device and handed to Apple’s share sheet; where they go is your choice. When someone sends you a library file, the app reads it on your device and adds the recipes to your library. Nothing about either of you is sent to us.
Third-party services
Decadent has one server of its own. It exists so that the key that pays for Claude never ships inside the app. It does not store anything about you. Apart from that server, the app talks to the websites and apps you import recipes from, to the video players of the posts you saved, to Anthropic (only through Claude reads), to USDA’s data only as it ships inside the app (no network), and to Apple (purchases, the anonymous device proof, and the map search behind “stores near you”). Apple’s services are governed by Apple’s own privacy policy.
Children’s privacy
Decadent does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children.
Data retention, deletion and your choices
We collect no personal data, so we have nothing to retain, expose or delete on our side. Your recipes and photos remain on your device and under your control; deleting the app deletes them. To stop sending anything to Claude, follow the steps under “When Claude reads a recipe”. What Anthropic received is deleted as described there. If you have a question or want to ask us anything about your data, email us at the address below.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the “Last updated” date above.
